Legislation:

The release and marketing of genetically modified (GM) ornamental fish is controlled in the European Union (EU)
under Council Directive 2001/18/EC. In the UK the Directive is implemented by Part VI of the Environmental
Protection Act (EPA) and (in England) the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) Regulations 2002
(similar regulations have been implemented in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).

The marketing or release of any GM ornamental fish is prohibited unless authorisation has been given under the
EPA or has an EU-wide consent issued by another member state in accordance with Directive 2001/18/EC.

Currently no GM fish have been authorised for marketing in the EU.
